Die Geschichte der GMT-Master begann mit der Zusammenarbeit von Pan American Airways (Pan Am) und einem anderen großen Luftfahrtunternehmen mit Rolex. Sie wünschten sich eine Uhr für ihre Piloten, die problemlos zwei verschiedene Zeitzonen gleichzeitig anzeigen konnte. Rolex stellte die GMT-Master 1959 unter der Referenznummer 6542 und später unter der Referenznummer 1675 vor. Sie blieb bis Ende der 1970er Jahre in Produktion. Danach führte Rolex die Referenznummer 16750 ein.
