Santos Octagon
Santos Octagon
Cartier
In 1904, Louis Cartier created a a watch for his Brazilian aviator friend Alberto Santos-Dumont that broke away from the conventions of the era. Unlike the rounded, flowing cases typical of pocket and wristwatches at the time, this watch featured a sharply defined square case with bezel screws left deliberately visible.
In the 1990s, Cartier gave the Santos a fresh update. Instead of the classic square shape, the case was redesigned with eight sides and paired with a matching bezel. Some people see this as a small nod to the Royal Oak’s shape. While most Santos Octagon watches were made in a two-tone mix of metals, this version is unique because it is built entirely from stainless steel.
