The Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 is the vintage Datejust in its most classic form: 36 mm, fluted bezel, acrylic crystal, and that unmistakable pie-pan dial that gives the watch far more charm than a flat dial ever could. Produced through the 1960s and much of the 1970s, it belongs to the generation that helped define the Datejust as the everyday Rolex — smart enough for a suit, relaxed enough for everything else. Early examples used Rolex’s cal. 1565, with later watches receiving the cal. 1575.
What makes the 1601 so appealing today is that it still feels properly vintage without becoming fussy. The pie-pan dial, the warm plexi crystal, and the classic Jubilee-and-fluted-bezel look give it exactly the kind of old Rolex character collectors keep chasing. It is not trying to impress anyone.
